Government Regulators Asked to Ban Use of Surgical Mesh
A consumer rights group has recently called on United States regulators to stop the use of a certain type of surgical mesh used in pelvic collapse surgeries. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has been asked to ban the use of pelvic surgical mesh that is inserted through the vagina in prolapsed and pelvic surgeries. Over 50,000 women were involved in prolapsed-related surgeries in the United States in 2010. The FDA has previously stated that the number of complications with surgical mesh is greater than previously thought. These complications include bleeding and serious infection and serious pain.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports that Dr. Michael Carome from the consumer rights group Public Citizen, states “Even the FDA seriously questions the safety and effectiveness of these mesh products, so they should be removed from the market immediately.” Surgical mesh injuries are serious and the victims in these cases can be left with serious internal injuries and life altering consequences. If you have injuries related to surgical mesh, please contact our firm for a free case evaluation.
Surgical mesh cases are a type of potential products liability case. Products used in surgery are expected to be of a design and quality that is not going to lead to an injury. Products that are improperly designed or manufactured can be potentially deadly. The law provides for protection when manufacturers of products design, produce or sell faulty products. Serious personal injury attorneys are there to hold those manufacturers accountable.
