Riverdale

Riverdale, Georgia is a city in Clayton County located in the west central portion of the state. At Millar & Mixon, LLC, we focus our practice on representing persons seriously injured in motor vehicle accidents in the Riverdale and Clayton County areas. The population in Riverdale was 12,478 at the time of the 2000 U.S. Census. Riverdale is the second largest of six cities in Clayton County.

The city of Riverdale was incorporated in 1908 with the name being in honor of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Rivers. The area incorporated was settled just before the Civil War. In 1887, a railroad was built from Fort Valley to Atlanta running through Riverdale. The Rivers family donated much of their land for the railroad to grow, and their land grew to become one of the main stops on the railroad.

The 4.3 square mile city is located about five miles south of Atlanta’s Hartsfield International Airport, one of the nation’s busiest airports. The city, located on Atlanta’s south side, is known as the “Southern Crescent” and is about 10 miles south of Atlanta.

In Riverdale, the most congested areas for traffic include GA 162 Salem Road to Flat Shoals Road and GA 212 Scott Highway/Browns Mill Road to GA 155 Snapfinger Road in DeKalb County according to the Atlanta Regional Scorecard. While congestion is present throughout the region, it is concentrated in areas with highest employment density. The high traffic congestion increases the chance traffic accidents occurring on Riverdale streets.

The City of Riverdale Municipal Court is located at 6690 Church Street, Riverdale. It has jurisdiction over violations of state law and local ordinances that occur within the city limits of Riverdale. These violations include most traffic related violations and some misdemeanor charges such as DUI. In Riverdale, the Municipal Court is comprised of three divisions. Traffic Court, Environmental Court, Automated Red Light Enforcement Court. Traffic Court adjudicates most infractions that violate state law. Environmental Court is responsible for adjudicating violations of local ordinances. Automated Red Light Enforcement Court is responsible for disposing of appeals brought by individuals that have received citation produced through the automated red-light camera system.

Jurisdiction differs when it comes to civil matters such as personal injury lawsuits. These lawsuits are held in state courts within each county except those reserved exclusively for the superior courts. Because it is the county seat, Jonesboro, not Riverdale, is home the State Court of the Clayton Judicial Circuit and the Superior Court of the Clayton Judicial Circuit, which are held at the Harold R. Banke Justice Center in Jonesboro. Along with 18 courtrooms, the justice center also contains a 1,536-bed detention center and the Clayton County Sheriff’s headquarters.

The Court cannot appoint attorneys to represent parties in civil matters (private disputes between two or more parties such as a personal injury lawsuit resulting from a vehicle accident). The car accident lawyers of Millar & Mixon, LLC have already helped hundreds of clients throughout the state of Georgia who were seriously injured in auto, truck, pedestrian, or bicycle accidents.

An investigation into what caused the accident or the severity and extent of your injuries may be harmed by any delay in obtaining legal counsel. The Southern Regional Health System has a facility, the Southern Regional Medical Center located in Riverdale, where Riverdale residents can receive emergency and trauma care for injuries.
