Safety of Town’s Police Cars Could Be Liability Issue

Topics:  Work Related Injuries

Officials in the Cobb County town of Powder Springs should heed the complaint of their police chief, who says his department’s cars have too many miles on them and are in critical condition.

Police Chief Charlie Sewell has told CBS Atlanta that some of the town’s patrol cars have more than 150,000 miles on them. That kind of wear and tear, he said, makes the cars dangerous for police officers and the public, particularly if they are used in a high speed chase.

Sewell said he’d like to replace patrol cars every three years, and has asked the Powder Springs City Council to lease new cars for the department, Fox 5 Atlanta said. The Council is studying the issue as it prepares next year’s budget.

If an accident were to happen and then be found to have been caused by a worn or defective vehicle, the town’s liability could be an issue.

Each case is different, but all employers should recognize that a negligent act on their part that results in an employee’s work related injury or death could result in legal action. Automobile accidents that harm third parties may also be actionable.

The personal injury attorneys at Millar and Mixon, LLC have experience with work-related injuries and can assist and advise anyone in the Metro Atlanta area who has been injured or has lost a loved one in a workplace accident, or in a truck, car or motorcycle accident.

Individuals who have been injured at work might recognize that there are workers’ compensation benefits available to them, but overlook additional claims and compensation that may be available depending on the facts of their specific situation. This is why it is always valuable to consult a Georgia personal injury attorney.
