Boat Show Smart to Close ‘Indoor Wake Park’
Topics: Slip & Fall Injuries
The Atlanta Boat Show made a wise decision to shut down an “Indoor Wake Park” that was to be the site of wakeboarding demonstrations during the January 12-15 show.
Before the show opened Thursday morning, a 100,000-gallon water tank ruptured and flooded a portion of the Georgia World Congress Center. One of two pools burst as professional wakeboarders were practicing in it.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
The Boat Show, perhaps realizing the giant pools presented a danger of work-related injuries, not to mention slip-and-fall injuries or catastrophic injuries once the public arrived, at first delayed opening of the show from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. while the cleanup ensued, according to an Atlanta Journal Constitution article. But by Friday morning, the Boat Show website said that “due to a pool malfunction, Atlanta’s Indoor Wake Park feature will be shut down for the duration of the show.” (Pro wakeboarders were still to be on-hand to meet fans.)
Again, a smart move. Had such an accident happened during the boat show, with hundreds and perhaps thousands of attendees in the path of a torrent of water, equipment and up-ended wakeboarders and onlookers, the injuries and perhaps deaths likely are shocking even to imagine.
